17th-19th April
If you've ever found yourself wanting for a weekend of fun, head down to Uncle Chang. That's exactly what I did. With a bunch of friends, who've some how made it an annual trip to get away from it all, why they chose this place baffled me but now I know . Our group was large in numbers, so we had to be divided. Some went staright to Mabul, others to Sipadan, whilst mine headed to Sibuan.
Sibuan, a small island, occupied by few families has one of those picturesque views to die for. While the dive was nothing to brag about, topside views of the island was something out of a deserted island paradise fantasy storybook. If you were shipwrecked, you'd probably want it to be here. Following day, dive at Sipadan, well, as always awesome. Sorry no underwater pics here, as you might have known, camera lost in Lembeh.
The dive trip in its own rite was fantastic but what made this weekend away spectacular was the night at Uncle Chang. On most days, it would probably be just as quiet but on the weekend this backpacker style logde is transformed into the most happening place on Mabul Island. Uncle Chang really does know how to hold a party. With its liveband, only available during weekends , serenaded the night away playing songs from the 70's rite to the now with a local twist.
One thing I can say, there aren't any strangers here at Uncle Chang, just friends you haven't met. You'll soon find this to be true by the time the weekend is over. This lodge houses visitors from the world over, mostly those of well traveled individual with fantastic stories to tell. Don't worry if you're that quiet shy type person, you won't be when you arrive and spend the weekend here. I usually don't recommend staying at any one particular place, but here at Uncle Chang, if you that Lonely Planet type of traveler, I'd say give it a go.
This Mabul trip has been fantastic.
